Glossary of Terms
Frequently used terms in the KUMRC* AFTGOTO's ("Anything For The Good Of The Order") :
Basically a time during meeting to announce anything that is beneficial or interesting to the club and/or the members, but it is not one of the official activities of the club.
* Dinner:
A dinner theatre event that we hold late in the hall semester. People pay for a meal, and we serve them food and put on a theatrical presentation.
* Faire:
An outdoor Medieval/Renaissance themed event held late in the spring semester on university grounds, where we perform a day long theatrical event (with gaps inbetween, of course) and have various vendors and merchants sell their wares.
* Garb:
Medieval/Renaissance period styled clothing
* Heraldry:
"The study of armorial bearings and the tracing of genealogies" or more simply, it is akin to family crests and insignias. The KUMRC has it's own heraldry and it is visible on both this website and on the main page of the Yahoo! group.
* Pennsic War:
A 2 week long SCA (see term below) event held in western Pennsylvania. It is not uncommon for a number of our current and past members to go to this event and other SCA events throughout the year.
* Persona:
Similar to the concept of a character in a movie or a play, but more interactive and dynamic--it basically amounts to an "alter-ego" with a period name and history (including time and place). Some people have personas that are always changing or are still in the making. Ask and see.
* Period:
Being accurate to a time and a place prior to a particular time (in most cases it means before 1600). This refers to clothing, food, music, dance, etc.
* Revel:
A revel is basically an event where we gather in one spot, in the efforts of having fun and depending on where/when the revel is held, possibly attracting new members.
* SCA ("Society for Creative Anachronism"):
An international organization that by and large dedicates itself to recreating the arts and skills prior to the 17th century. Very large European focus, but still room enough for those with interests in personas from other parts of the world. Their website is http://www.sca.org
* University Weekend/MMRR/Medieval Mayhem and Renaissance Revelry:
A weekend long event held on campus where we try to hold classes pretaining to Medieval and Renaissance life and culture, as well as theatrical workshops. In addition, people can learn how to make garb all weekend long--just ask for some help, someone might know.
