Faire 2007
On behalf of the entire KUMRC, we would like to express our gratitude to all of the people who helped make this year's Renaissance Faire such a success.
We'd like to thank our director and "scriptwriter" Will Stevens for his hard work,
leadership, and guidance.
We'd like to thank our fight choreographer, Kimmie Kat and her student assistants
for making the fights for the human chess match run safely and smoothly.
We'd like to thank the cast for all of their time, effort, learning and memorizing they did to make the characters of this faire come to life.
We'd like to thank all of the vendors, merchants and performers who came to our faire and helped make it a more enjoyable time for everyone.
We'd like to thank the members of the KUMRC who put in hours of work to help this faire run.
And most of all we'd like to thank all of the people who came to our faire. We hope everyone had a wonderful time, and we hope to see you all next year!

Scriptorium
The Kutztown University Medieval and Renaissance Club was created in the fall semester of 1988, when some medieval-minded students joined forces with professor Charles Scanzello. Notable founding fathers were Eric Munsen (now Lord Matsuyama Mokurai, an officer of Eisental, the local SCA chapter) Arthur Cancro, Erin Astolfi, Greg Brissom, and Thiep Pham.
These students came from every college in the University, from Business and Telecommunications,to Theater, Art and Music. But in the end, they all shared the really IMPORTANT common interests: funny accents, funny clothes, Monty Python, Rocky Horror, sharp pointy things, et al. Scanzello was a natural choice for advisor.
He was already director of the KU Recorder Ensemble; there, he educated students about this lovely family of medieval woodwinds, and taught them to play the haunting, gentle chamber music written for them. For many years, he had also coordinated both the Renaissance Faire, and the Renaissance Christmas Dinner. (***Let us stress this---ALL BY HIMSELF. Call him a benign megalomaniac, or a mere raving loon....but singlehandedly, the guy managed a workload currently shouldered by an entire board of KUMRC officers!!!)An amicably foggy professor from the Music department, Scanzello bore a frightening resemblance to veteran crooner Burl Ives. (I mean it. Watch "Rudolph" the next time it's televised. Get a good, solid look at that singing snowman, and tell me I'm wrong.) And no matter where you were on campus, you could always tell when Scanzello was approaching or where he'd been, by the musk from his trademark pipe. If you were extraordinarily lucky, he might even remember your name.
So anyway. On October 8, 1988, the Kutztown University Medieval Renaissance Club was born.(Cue the fanfare. Something like "Also Sprach Zarathustra" or the Darth Vader death-march, played on 50 off-key kazoos; that would be appropriate.) The campus took one look, squeaked "there goes the neighborhood!" scampered behind the nearest door and locked itself in tight.(Bless their hearts. :::evil gryn::: In this aspect of our relations, very little has changed.) According to its original Constitution, the KUMRC had the goal in mind of becoming an on-campus branch of the Society for Creative Anachronism, or SCA.
They even chose a name for their fledgeling Shire: Faulconmere. The "falcon" part referred to nearby Hawk Mountain where local wildlife enthusiasts gather to observe birds of prey. "Mere," referred to a pair of local lakes, Ontelaunee and Blue Marsh.But over the years that goal has taken a back seat to others. Being a college organization, nipped the KUMRC's SCAdian aspirations in the bud pretty early on. (The way the KU student groups are set up, you can't receive University funding if you belong to a non-profit organization---of which the SCA is one.) Nowadays, the group is best described as a crossover between the Rennies (those who frequent the Ren-Faire circuit,) and medieval re-creation groups, such as Markland and the SCA. Participating freely with both camps, it belongs to no one but itself.
It's an unusually excellent hybrid; akin to one of those in-between twilight places of Celtic legend, where mayem and magic are at their strongest. We still sponsor the KU Renaissance Dinner in December, and the KU Renaissance Faire in May. In between, are educational University weekends, workshops, outings to the Ren Faires and SCA events.
This May, the KUMRC celebrates its 18th anniversary. Eighteen...hmm. We have been around for quite a while hopefully we will be here for many years to come

1st Saturday in December every yearRevel: The Attack on the DMZ
Every semester we try to conquer the big grassy plot of land in the center of our campus called the DMZ. Here we make a lot of noise, accost the pedestrians and attempt to recruit them into our club, and we usually have a melee for everyone to witness. More fun then we should have on a February afternoon, but we have itKUMRC Annual Renaissance Faire
The Ren Faire is for all of campus to have a great time to sit and watch a performance put on by the club and there is a kid's faire, because we all know hook the kids and the parents stay. Many vendors sell there vairous wears. Dancing done by a talented dance troupe, and much much more.
Our 2005 Faire takes place on April 30 and May 1 on the DMZ.University Weekend
The University Weekend is a chance for the members, campus, and community to learn new and interesting things. Many workshops go on during the day and there is a feast Saturday night. Our Saturday classes end in farbling, one of our favourite past times. Farbling is where we get all dressed up and in our personas and go out to a public place and have fun. It's quite a sight.Events will be posted as soon as they are scheduled. Any questions, comments, or observations please direct to

The Policy of the KUMRC with Regards to Live Steel and Weaponry
In order to maintain the safety of KUMRC members and visitors to the KUMRC, the Executive Board has enacted the following rules and regulations regarding live steel weapons.* Weapons must be stage-combat weapons. No authentic (real or sharp) weapons are allowed.
* Weapons must be sheathed.
* Weapons must be piece-tied.
* Weapons must be secured to their carrier at all times.
* Weapons may not be drawn in a crowd.
* Anyone drawing a weapon must say “Clear!” in a highly audible tone. This lets others around you know that a weapon is being drawn, and that they should stay clear.
* No weapons may be drawn if a child is in the room.
* Most of all, USE COMMON SENSE! If you don’t have it, you shouldn’t have a weapon in your hands.
IF A RULE IS BROKEN:
FIRST OFFENSE: The offender will be asked to leave the event and will not be allowed to carry a weapon at any KUMRC event for the remainder of the semester.
SECOND OFFENSE: The offender will be banned from the KUMRC indefinitely.
These rules will be strictly enforced by the Executive Board!
Although they may sound harsh, these regulations not only ensure the safety of KUMRC members and guests, but also help the KUMRC avoid any legal problems with Kutztown University, or local and state authorities.

It all started on Berkley campus in '66, when a bunch of students innocently threw a medieval-themed birthday party. It's 38 years later. Boy, do those #$@!! hippies have a lot to answer for!! :)
Not really as big nor sprawling as SCA---but very dedicated, and tons of fun to hang with. Think of them as "SCA Lite," if you will. :) That's just the corporate name; at events, this group is the "Holy Kingdom of Acre." The MSR re-creates a Crusader kingdom; based in New York, they perform demos and events all over the East Coast. "ARMA - the Association for Renaissance Martial Arts, is an educational non-profit organization dedicated to the study and practice of historical fencing and the exploration and promotion of our Western martial heritage." [taken verbatim from their website] Warning, kids: Don't try this at home! Take a look at some of the stff they're doing here! Running August 16th through October 13th. August 24th through-? Just outside Annapolis. One of the loveliest period events you'll ever attend. PennRen, would fit neatly into a single corner of MDRF. The shopping is a religious experience. Bring money and lots of it. Located in Tuxedo, NY, and beginning soon! ("Thank GOD," cry all the KU Rennies already going through Ren-Faire withdrawl.) Running June 29th through August 11. The Renaissance Faire information clearing-house. A very potent search engine, for finding a Faire near you. Renaissance Faire listings from around the world. Religiously updated. alt.fairs.renaissance is a newsgroup/message board where you can promote your local Faire, and chat with other Rennies. |
